Call for Papers

The University of Mauritius, in collaboration with the Southern Africa Society for Disaster Reduction, is proud to announce the Call for Papers for the upcoming 6th Biennial Conference to be held in Mauritius. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to gather the latest research, insights, and innovations in disaster risk management, aiming to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and drive action towards reducing disaster risks and enhancing resilience.

Themes and Topics

We welcome submissions that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Disaster Risk Challenges and Best-practices within Small-Island States
  • Tropical cyclones and severe weather
  • The private sector and disaster risk reduction
  • Multi-hazard early warning information and systems
  • Building community resilience to disasters and climate risks
  • Disaster risk financingDRR, urbanisation and risk-informed development
  • Systems thinking and complex adaptive systems in DRR
  • Media, communication, and advocacy
  • Disaster data and databases
  • Transboundary DRR
  • Eco-DRR and conservation in DRR
  • DRR/CCA governance, frameworks, policies, and programmes
  • AI, science, innovation, and technology in disaster risk management
  • Coastal Vulnerability and protection
  • Business resilience to climate change

Submission guidelines

Abstracts: Submissions should begin with an abstract of no more than 350 words, clearly outlining the research question, methodology, results, and implications for disaster risk management. 

Full Papers: Upon abstract acceptance, full papers should be submitted following the detailed guidelines provided for Jamba: Journal of Disaster Risk Studies. Full papers should not exceed 8,000 words, including references, tables, and appendices. Successful papers will be published open source with no additional cost to the author(s).

Presentation Format: Guidelines for presentation will be provided with the acceptance notification.

Submission Process: Submissions should be sent electronically through the abstract submission above. Feedback will be given on a forthnightly basis.

  • Early Bird registration: 31 May 2024
  • Notification of Abstract Acceptance: 15 June 2024
  • Full Paper Submission Deadline: 15 July 2024
  • Notification of Full Paper Acceptance: tbc

Publication opportunities

Selected papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of a Jamba: Journal of Disaster Risk Studies, a peer-reviewed journal or in the conference proceedings, subject to further review. Successful papers will be published open source with no additional cost to the author(s).
